Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University 2023

Knight-Hennessy Scholars is a graduate-level scholarship program at Stanford University that provides full funding for students from all around the world who want to pursue a graduate degree at Stanford.

The program was established in 2016 and is named after two Stanford alumni, Nike co-founder Phil Knight and former university president John L. Hennessy.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program is open to all graduate programs at Stanford, including PhDs, master's degrees, JDs, MDs, and other professional degrees.

The program seeks to support individuals with leadership potential who demonstrate independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset.

Overview Of Scholarship

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program at Stanford University cultivates a diverse, multidisciplinary community of young leaders from around the world and trains them to collaborate, invent, and communicate as they prepare to address society's challenging challenges.

Scholars will enhance their knowledge, acquire skills, and strengthen their character as they participate in community activities, workshops, meetings with leaders, domestic and global study excursions, and personal development opportunities through the King Global Leadership Program.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars are drawn from all seven schools at Stanford. Knight-Hennessy Scholars are gifted individuals who are part of an interdisciplinary community of scholars.

The program provides a framework for deliberate leadership development and equips you to make a large-scale beneficial impact in the world.

Full-time Masters and PhD degrees in any subject offered at Stanford (for example, but not limited to, DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD) with some exceptions:

• Applicants to the Honors Cooperative Program
• Applicants to the Master of Liberal Arts
• Applicants to the Doctor of Science of Law (JSD)
• Current Stanford students applying for coterminal graduate study
• Current Stanford PhD students adding an MA or MS degree in their current discipline

Each year, up to 100 Knight-Hennessy Scholars are selected from a pool of thousands of applicants based on their academic excellence, leadership potential, and personal qualities.

Scholars receive full funding for tuition, fees, and living expenses for the duration of their graduate program at Stanford.

In addition, scholars participate in leadership development programs, mentorship opportunities, and other special events to enhance their personal and professional growth.

Target group:

Candidates from all nations are welcome; there are no limits based on citizenship, age, topic of study, professional goals, or any other factor.

Scholarship worth, inclusions, and duration

Knight-Hennessy scholars get financing for any graduate degree(s) at Stanford for up to three years.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars earn the following awards throughout their first three years of graduate study:

• a fellowship that is sought for directly to cover tuition and related fees

• a living and academic stipend (such as room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transportation, and reasonable personal expenses)

• a travel stipend to cover the cost of an economy-class ticket to and from Stanford once per year.

Extra funds for specific years:

• Newly enrolled scholars receive a one-time relocation payment to help defray some of the costs involved with relocating to the area and/or purchasing technology.

• Scholars in their second and third years may apply for supplementary monies to support academic enrichment activities (e.g., conference travel).

Eligibility Criteria

There are two fundamental eligibility standards.

First, you must apply to, be accepted by, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, such as, but not limited to, a DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD program in addition to applying to Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS).

At least one of the four requirements listed below must be met by you:

You are simultaneously applying for both KHS and a full-time graduate degree program at Stanford so that you can begin both in the same academic year.

You will apply to KHS so that you can start both in the same year even though you have already been offered and deferred admission to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program.

You will submit an application to add a second full-time graduate degree program at Stanford, starting both KHS and the new program in the same academic year. You are a current graduate student at Stanford.

You are a first-year PhD student at Stanford currently, and you will apply to KHS so that you can begin KHS in your second year of PhD enrollment.

Second, you need to have graduated from a reputable institution or university in the United States with a bachelor's degree or its equivalent by January 2016 or later.

A bachelor's degree must have been achieved by January 2016 or later in order to apply to join the cohort in 2023, and a bachelor's degree must have been earned by January 2017 or later in order to apply to join the cohort in 2024.

Application guidelines

Applications aren't being accepted right now.

The application process for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program typically opens in May and closes in October each year.
Applicants must first apply separately to their desired graduate program at Stanford and then apply for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program.
Finalists are invited to participate in an in-person Immersion Weekend at Stanford, where they interview with faculty, staff, and current scholars.
The final selection of Knight-Hennessy Scholars is made in February of each year.
Applying to both the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program and your Stanford graduate degree program simultaneously and independently is required in order to be considered for the scholarship.
By 1:00 PM Pacific Time on October 12, 2022, applications for the Knight Hennesy Program must be submitted.
