Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS)

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program, which is named in honor of Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the country's first francophone governor general, aids Canadian universities in luring top-notch doctorate candidates. 

One of the most coveted graduating awards in Canada is the Vanier. International students, Canadian citizens, and people with permanent residence status are all eligible to apply. Before January 2024, all applicants must be enrolled full-time in a doctorate program.

Brief description

To bring in and keep top-tier doctoral students and position Canada as a global hub of excellence in research and higher education, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) were established. The grants are for doctoral degrees (or combination MA/PhD or MD/PhD degrees).

Institution(s) presenting the program:

Canadian Universities having Vanier CGS allotment. The Vanier CGS can only be used at the Canadian institution that qualified for it and submitted the nomination.

Study level and/or field(s):

In the fields of health research, natural scientific or engineering research, social science or humanities research, or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD programs are all available as PhD degrees.

To be considered for eligibility, a doctoral program must have a substantial research component that results in the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, academic publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level.

A significant autonomous research component, as described above, is a requirement for clinically-oriented programs of study, such as clinical psychology, as well as joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD). These programs are also eligible for funding.

Number of Scholarships:

Up to 166 scholarships are awarded annually

Target group:

Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.

Scholarship value/duration:

The scholarships is worth $50,000 per year for three years.

Eligibility:

When applying for a Vanier CGS, you must:

You have only one nomination from a Canadian institution, and that institution must have obtained a Vanier CGS quota;

• Be pursuing your first doctorate (including dual undergraduate/graduate research programs like: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD - if it includes a demonstrable and significant research component). A combined degree's PhD component is the only part that qualifies for financing, therefore keep that in mind;

• Intend to undertake full-time doctoral study and research at the university that nominated them during the summer semester or the academic year that follows the announcement of the findings (or in a dual graduate program like MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD); A combined degree's PhD component is the only part that qualifies for financing, therefore keep that in mind;

• As of May 1, 2023, have no more than 20 months of PhD study remaining.

• Have finished their doctoral program in no more than 32 months of full-time study by May 1, 2023, 

if enrolling in a dual-degree graduate research program, such as an MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or DVM/PhD. 

Candidates who fit into this category are eligible for the 32-month window regardless of whether they were previously enrolled in a Master's program, accelerated from a Bachelor's to a PhD without spending any time in a Master's program, or accelerated from a Master's degree into a Doctoral program without earning the Master's degree.

You have completed your last two years of full-time study with a first-class average overall, as established by your school. Candidates are urged to get in touch with the school to learn what constitutes a first-class average; and

You must not now or previously possess a PhD-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC in order to pursue or earn a doctoral degree.

Instructions for application:

Application process is ongoing.

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian Institution where there is room for them to enroll. The Vanier CGS program does not accept direct applications.

One of two methods can be used to start an application. Either the student notifies the graduate program's faculty at the chosen institution of their intention to apply to the Vanier CGS program OR the chosen institution starts the nomination procedure by getting in touch with the prospective applicant.

The ResearchNet application system is used by the student to create their applications, which are then delivered to the nominating institution by their internal deadline. After that, by 1 November 2023, the nominating institution sends the Secretariat of the Vanier-Banting Organization (the Secretariat) its suggested nominations.
