Brief description


The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is available to exceptional students from outside the European Economic Area and the European Free Trade Association who intend to pursue a master's degree at Leiden University full-time.

The University of Leiden can be found in the Netherlands.


Study level/area of concentration:

Every one of the full-time Master's degree programs offered by Leiden University, with the exception of the LLM (non-advanced) and MSc degree programs offered by Leiden Law School.


Number of Honors Received:

The amount of money available in each faculty department's budget determines the number of scholarships that may be given out and the kinds of scholarships that can be given out.


The intended audience:

Nationals of countries outside the EEA and EFTA* (see details below)




Scholarship amount and time commitment

There are three different awards available through the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program:


• One thousand euros of the total cost of tuition


• 15,000 Euros worth of the total tuition cost


• The total tuition fee deducted by the minimum required tuition fee



The Lexis Excellence Scholarship is not a full scholarship. 

Non-EEA LExS recipients are still required to provide "evidence of sufficient money" in conjunction with their application for a student visa or residence permit.




Eligibility

Students are expected to have excelled academically throughout their previous education, particularly in areas that are directly applicable to the Master's degree program for which they are applying. 

As a point of reference, the student is ranked in the top ten percent of graduates from the program that he or she completed previously. 

Note that you are not needed to provide verification of your rating; the purpose of this information is solely to illustrate the level of competitiveness.


Students applying to the LLM Advanced Studies programs or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, for which there are no nationality restrictions, are the only ones who are not required to have a passport from a country that is a member of the European Economic Area or the European Free Trade Association (EEA or EFTA) in order to be considered for support through the Dutch system of study grants and loans known as "Studiefinanciering."

Instructions for submitting an application

In order to be considered for admission to a Master's program at Leiden University, you must first submit an online application. 

You are need to make it crystal clear in the scholarship portion of your application that you would want to apply for the LExS scholarship, and you are also required to upload your letter of motivation specifically for the LExS scholarship. 

The application deadline for programs that begin in September is the 1st of February (with the exception of Advanced LLMs, which have a deadline of the 1st of March), whereas the application deadline for programs that begin in February is the 1st of October.
